One cocky little dog!
I came out with Athena after lunch today and spotted a fox slowly working his way towards "Bescow the Bull Calf". Nothing would have happened since a calf is too big for a fox. (They usually eat mice and hate confrontation with anything much bigger.) However, Athena and I spotted him before he saw us and I sicced her on him. Boy was Athena pissed that something was getting close to her cows! She exploded into a black and white ball of fury after the fox, barking and threatening him with a very violent end. What power! What speed! It was like watching a very noisy little fighter plane zipping along 15 centimeters over the ground. The fox got the point immediately and made a beeline for the woods. Athena chased him out of the pasture, over the creek, across the newly planted barley field and into the woods where he promptly lost her. That was one cocky little dog that came out of the woods a minute later. I don't expect the fox back anytime soon, which was the point of the exercise.

But he did come back. A couple of days later the old "boss" cow started calving right after lunch. She had gone down into the lowest part of the pasture along the fence line next to the creek. I went down to check how far she was coming along and nearly tripped ov the stupid fox. I went back to get Athena in hopes of repeating her earlier performance. The fox just ducked down into the creek bed and Athena raced around barking her head off looking for whatever I seemed to be worried about. She didn't see anything. I suspect the fox was hugging the ground only a couple of meters away. Laughing at us. The "boss" cow moved away for a bit with the first part of the placent hanging out of her back end, probably wondering what all the fuss was about. We left her alone after that and when I checked back twenty minutes later she was busy cleaning up a new heifer calf. And that is why we have Angus. When it's time to go thse calves just come sliding right out like they are ridng on a "Slippery Slide."
